The Engineering Physics Education is an engineering-based education combining engineering concepts and fundamental science of physics and mathematics to develop creative and innovative applications. Engineering Physics was invented to enhance multi-discipline science and technology development, which require engineers having strong theoretical science and practical engineering abilities.
Associated as the discipline that bridges the gap between basic science and engineering, Engineering Physics has a very broad spectrum of courses from the upstream to down, includes the concepting of ideas as far as its applications. The curriculum covers core sciences, as mathematics, physics, chemistry, even statistics and electives from several engineering field (electrical, mechanical, material, chemical engineering). The alumni are expected to be able to solve technological problems and doing innovative work based on scientific method and analysis. Student of the Department of Engineering Physics, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) was provided with research and development, as well as design and analysis of industrial systems, with specialization in: Instrumentation and Controls, Energy, Materials, Vibration and Acoustics, and Photonics.
Department of Engineering Physics ITS has three study programs, i.e.:
- Bachelor Program (regular and extension program)
- Master Program
- Doctoral Program
Engineering Physics in Indonesia
First established in Indonesia at 1950, the Engineering Physics education in Indonesia developing continuously until in 2017, provided by eight higher education institutions: Institut Teknologi Bandung, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Universitas National, Telkom University, Surya University, Sekolah Tinggi Teknologi Mutu Muhammadiyah Tangerang, and Universitas Multimedia Nusantara. The popular Engineering Physics specializations in Indonesia are Instrumentation and Control, and Energy Engineering. Instrumentation and Control is highly related to national industrialization, while Energy Engineering focus on the study of renewable energy and energy conservation. Other specializations such as material, photonics, and acoustics is only available in few institutes.
Engineering Physics in International
In International scope, Engineering Physics sometimes known as Applied Physics. The curriculum is much depending on the universities but commonly similar. Unlike in Indonesia, where there are only 8 institutions has this department, Engineering Physics is popular is America, Japan, and European countries due to its heterogeneous specializations. Front-end engineering areas such as mechatronics, nanotechnology, microelectronics, photonics, and biophysics are the examples of elective courses available around the world.
Department of Engineering Physics ITS is a leading institute in several research topics:
- Instrumentation and Control Engineering: Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), industrial instruments, automatic control, medical instruments
- Energy Engineering and Environmental Conditioning: energy management, green building, renewable energy, thermal and fluid engineering
- Materials Engineering: polymers, semiconductor, corrosion
- Vibration and Acoustics: noise mapping, vibrations, lighting
- Photonics: Fiber Optic sensors, biomedical photonics, lasers
